Unleashing God’s Power for a Breakthrough in Your Life

Last weekend I was asked to speak at a women’s retreat.


I prayed about what God wanted me to speak about and He led me to a scripture that unleashed a whole new love for Jesus and a level of understanding about His power working in us.


I believe this message could change your life. Writing it changed mine, I know someone else needs to hear this because I did.


The theme of the retreat was unleashed, so I dug into the scriptures and prayed about what it meant to be unleashed. Honestly, most of the scriptures I found were about God unleashing his anger in the old testament, but I found one that shook me and showed me that it is important to God that women get healed and free.


Here’s our foundational scripture


A Spirit of Infirmity Luke 13:10–17
"Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way [a]raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God."


There is so much in this that I want to break it apart and give you some takeaways!


The woman who had a spirit of infirmity, she is us. Infirmity is mentioned throughout the Bible as a spiritual or physical weakness or ailment. I want you to put yourself in this scenario. What infirmity do you have that is causing you to be bent over: The weight of it on your shoulders is too much to bear. Rejection, shame, abandonment, infidelity, addiction, abuse…how long have you been dealing with it?


She had been living with this for 18 years. It’s time to break off any spirit of infirmity. Make today the day you get very serious about your healing and wholeness. Why you’re still struggling with it? She could not raise herself. She was bent over; we cannot do it alone. The weight of this life is too heavy to bare alone. We need Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. We need to be delivered.


He called her to Him, laid His hands on her, and said, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” In an instant, she was healed. He called her to Him, WOW! All the times we think Jesus doesn’t see us, but it says, He called her to Him.


Do you feel Him calling you? Think of this woman in a crowd, she probably felt invisible, but Jesus saw her, He knew she was in pain, and He took it away. And He laid His hands on her. In just a moment with Jesus, just a touch from Jesus, she was healed. It just takes a moment, just a touch. Jesus had compassion for her and healed her on the Sabbath day, which infuriated the Pharisees. He wasn’t interested in man-made rules. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

Jesus took away her pain, and immediately she was made straight and glorified God. Her story for His glory! Have you ever thought about it like that? Your story is for His glory? Your healing, your recovery, and your new start are all becasue of Jesus, and we need to share what God has done, what he healed, what crooked places He has made straight, and what dry bones he has brought back to life. What emotional, mental, or physical pain has He healed. Tell someone and share the good news of Jesus Christ.

In case you’re thinking, “But I still wrestle with it,” or” I’m still working it out,” remember there is no perfect this side of heaven, and celebrate and share how far you’ve come. God is bigger than our fears, what people have done to us, our pasts, the rejection that makes us shrink back, and the times we’ve failed that broke our spirits.

He is the God of the universe, and He is calling us to Him. He has put greatness in us, and His word and time with Him are the ground on which all greatness grows.
We often put God in a neat little Sunday box, but when we do this, we lack power and ability. We are carrying the weight of life's burdens alone, but today we answer the call and give Him full authority over our lives, and in doing so, we unleash His mighty power that works within us.

God is calling us to Him, and when we answer, we have power that can get us through anything and accomplish more than we ask or think!

Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.”

"His power that is at work within us." Have you ever really stopped to think about that phrase?

From Ephesians 3:20 it’s His power that is available to us and at mighty work in us, not ours…
It’s the same power that rose Jesus from the grave that works in you.
It’s the same power that enabled Abraham and Sarah to have a child.
It’s the same power that parted the Red Sea.
It’s the same power that caused the walls of Jericho to come tumbling down.


My Challenge For Us

Let’s stop limiting God in our lives by experiencing anything less than the fullness of his glory, grace, and power. Let’s stop missing out on miracles, living in fear, and let’s unleash His power in our lives. It’s time to break off any spirit of infirmity!


I want to give you some homework. I want you to read Psalm 91 every day this week.

Before you go, let’s pray!

Father God, so many of us have spirits of infirmity that we have been carrying all our lives. Pain from our childhoods, shame from our pasts, spouses that cheated on us, friends who rejected us, people who have abused us, and death of loved ones, and we are buckling under the pain, but we ask today that you heal us, that you release us from the spirit of infirmity, we are answering your call we want to glorify you - make us straight, make us right with you. Father, show us what we need to lay down, show us the places where we are broken, heal us, Father, break off the spirits of infirmity!
Father God, give us the strength to forgive those who have hurt us and forgive ourselves for the sins that have separated us from you. We understand that according to your word in Mark 11:23-27, Unforgiveness is a thief that steals away your blessings.

We want to be right with you, Father God, according to your word, we believe your word, woman, thou art loosed from the spirit of infirmity. Help us close our eyes and see any spirits of infirmity: the pain from the past breaking off as we stand up straight, shoulders back, head up, and moving forward and free in you.

I pray this over my sisters. Help us see and experience your mighty power working in us.
