F.I.T. Bible Study Series: Step 8 “How to Find Joy in Your Fitness Struggle”

Step 8 of the F.I.T Bible Study Series is about changing your perspective and finding joy in every situation.

"The joy of the Lord is your strength." (Nehemiah 8:10)

If the joy of the Lord is our strength, then happiness isn’t material; it’s a choice we make in those tough moments to see Him working in our circumstances rather than focusing on our problems. I find joy by grabbing my daughter and hugging her, playing my favorite Christian song that makes me feel overwhelmed by God’s love and His presence, choosing to see people through the eyes of grace—remembering all the things God has forgiven me of, and recognizing when I choose gratitude over complaining.

Even if you make mistakes along the way, don’t let yourself be controlled by self-doubt, laziness, depression, or any other negative feeling along this F.I.T. journey. Let the joy of the Lord be your strength, and feel the difference it makes. For example, the next time you are dreading a cardio workout, think about your health from a different perspective. Take your focus off of how much you would rather sit on the couch and catch up on your favorite TV shows and consider your amazing heart, which beats approximately 100,000 times a day (That’s over 36 million times a year!) and how it is strengthened when you exercise. Now that’s perspective!

Happiness is a Choice

One night at a women’s Bible study I led, I went around the table asking my friends, “How do you define happiness?” Their answers were as follows:

  • Appreciation—“Being a stay at home mom is the toughest work I’ve ever done. I want my husband and kids to know how hard I work even though I don’t technically have a job.”
  • Support—“I need people around me who get me. Sometimes I feel like I’ve got to do everything alone, and it’s hard. As a single mom, it helps so much when someone comes alongside of me and offers a helping hand and encouragement.”
  • Money—“If we had more money, we wouldn’t have as much stress. It sure would solve a lot of our problems.”
  • Morning workouts (You know I liked this answer.)—`That time spent in the morning is my ‘me time,’ it’s how I work through my stress and have the energy to get through the day. I’m not a nice person without it.”
  • Feeling loved—“When my husband does the dishes because I’m too tired or my kids wrap their arms around me and squeeze me really tight, my heart smiles.”

While these are great responses, they are also circumstantial. Do you see what I’m saying? We can’t hitch our happiness to anything that varies from day to day. Our emotional state can disrupt our fitness goals, so we need to take our focus off of our feelings and place it on our “Why.”

The enemy wants us to be unhappy. He came to kill, steal, and destroy. If he can keep us down, we can’t come alive for the purposes God has designed for us.

Faith Fuel:

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice." (Philippians 4:4 )

We need to stop the cycle of feeling sad, mad, hurt, or even lonely and eating to numb our pain. Doing so makes us feel worse in the long run and gets us nowhere. Living out this health journey with God means we live in the light and not in darkness. We put Him on the throne and ask Him to take our hand and help navigate us through day-to-day life. Let’s choose to desire the truth about ourselves and find contentment in Him and not in food.
