The Hardest Part of Being a Fit-Mom

“Mom, I want my stuffed animals, then I want to listen to Kidz Bop–I want to listen to my music, and can I do that with you?”

This was all while I was trying to get my workout in and as you can see being a mom does sometimes get in the way of personal time. It can feel overwhelming and often frustrating. But my daughter is incredible and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

We all know being a mom is tough, and trying to get in shape when you’re a mom is even tougher. That being said, I think it’s important to recognize we’re all facing the same issues, so we can help each other feel supported and understood.

Here are my Top 10 Major Challenges to our Success:
1. Support
2. Time/Organization
3. Motivation
4. Exhaustion
5. Resources
6. It feels impossible/Giving up on yourself
7. Goals that aren’t broken down into daily behaviors
9. Becoming a mom made you feel like your fit days were over
10. It’s too much work

If you relate to one or more of these challenges know this—YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Don’t let these things get in the way of your success! Each day do something good for yourself and remember that every good thing you do for yourself will make a positive influence on your family to do the same.

Moms should try to embody what they want their children to become.

So just think about your workout as time for yourself that is simultaneously acting as a very important lesson. When I think about my daughter watching me work out or make a healthy meal, I also think about her doing the same when she’s my age. That is how I want her to see her life. I want her to know that her body and health are important and she shouldn’t let things get in the way of that.

    iam finding it so hard im a mum of 4 and it is hard you are an insperation, i would love to give what you do a go i just dont know were to start im 72kg and my little one had colic real bad so i stopped everthing and forgot about me. The hardest thing i find is no one gives advice away for free its like a maze you get lost in what nutrion you should have or exersise you should do i dont have $ for a good pt can you give me some good tips thanx so much i love the spritual fitness training too..

      I have my training and nutrition on my site. I think it’s important to not get wrapped up in what plan, but start incorporating exercise in your daily life and choosing food that is natural- not bagged and processed. I hope this helps. Please check out these topics within my site.

    It has been hard to lose the belly fat after having a baby 9 months ago. I I have always been in shape and worked out but around the belly is just not going away. I’m 42. Any suggestions??

      Be patient and put the work in. It’s a slow process, but not an impossible one. Are you on a good plan?

    A variety of fitness to not get bored when you can’t afford a gym membership/fit in the time to travel and get there.

    Thanks for this quick post. It is very difficult to get the workouts in during waking hours of the children. They too are always climbing all over me and wanting to do what I do, it can be very frustrating and take three times longer to complete. With that being said, I am super happy that they are wanting to exercise, my daughter is 5 and my son 2. My daughter knows the importance of being fit and healthy and I love that.

    Finding ‘me’ time. My kids always want a part of me and thats their right. After a full days work then I work evenings as a Personal Trainer I give them me – so I have to make my workouts fun and incorporate them or do it at night or early morning when they are still asleep 🙂

    I have a workout/playroom too! Sometimes Lyra likes to join in and workout like Mommy. She rides her giraffe bike or lifts her own little weights. She even makes up her own yoga poses. It does mean I often have Dora on during my treadmill time but at least I know I’ll have a healthy kid

    Time is definately the big one…exhaustion fits in there with it as I usually find time for myself by getting up before the sun. Guilt in being away from them more to go to the gym is also a struggle after working 40+ hours a week….the working Mom thing is a delicate balance.

    nursing but trying to keep my milk suppy up when I work out to hard….I think you are an amazing inspiration to moms and think its obvious God had blessed you for showing others what is possible with faith.

    I know this all too well. But, I get my tush to the gym while my daugter is at school, than take her with me to the gym a few days a week. I get in some yoga, and she has a blast in the Kid’s Club. When my daughter was a baby, I just used her as my workout. Baby Sumo Squats are the best, and she always had a blast 🙂

    I’m a single mom of 4 kids (3 at home. 8, 6 & 2 yrs old). Its all the above!! And trying to get a workout in when I got a 2 year old who thinks if mom is on the floor, that means wrestle time!

    DIET! when you’re eating REALLY clean, ya know spinach and tilapia and what-not. We don’t eat junk food in our house, but still, kids like a little snack and deserve to have indulgences.It is hard to stay on track and please everyone. (oh yeah, and add a husband to the picture)

    Time! I need to get it done before everybody wakes up in the mornig. I have a 9 y/o special child who requires a lot of time and attention, a 3 y/o active boy and a 10 m/o baby girl. All in the house!!! so I have to wake up before 5 am to get some prayer/meditation, nurse the baby, get dressed and go, go, go! But it feels amazing!!

    It’s so funny you posted this! I just experienced this myself and remember thinking I wouldn’t want it any other way, ever! Even if one is just bouncing on the physio ball chatting away and the other is pretending to be me exercising,-I know in my heart they are learning the stepping stones to staying healthy and keeping active! As teen/tweens, they are up against so much in terms of peer pressure and lack of proper nutritional education in school. As a mom, I need to walk the walk rather than just talking the talk. While I know it can be hard to focus, its still quality time with them I cherish, and it can be so humorous too! Thanks so much for sharing!

    Biggest challenge? Interruptions! It seems even the best-laid plans tend to get usurped by unexpected events…sudden illness, incidents around the house, kids needing rides or needing things dropped off at school, work or Dad’s…so I’m always having to think on my feet and switch gears in order to get things accomplished. Generally speaking I get less done than originally planned…frustrating. I’ve had to become less of a perfectionist, and consciously celebrate what I am able to accomplish and be thankful for it. :-/ ~kim~

    Feeling Guilty for the headspace time it consumes as well as physical time. Im getting ready to compete for the first time and im soooo grumpy. I feel very mean. You look amazing Kim, very inspiring.

      Mentally competing is like going to war with yourself–try to remember and focus on what made you want to do it in the first place! I block out time that I give my daughter 100% of me, it’s good for both of us! I wish you all the best at your show! 🙂

    I think the guilt was the most difficult part in the beginning. But now I have realized I’m being a good role model for my children- now they believe exercise is just something you’re suppose to do. I think creating healthy habits/beliefs in young children early is so important.

    I do a mommy and me fitness class..that has been amazing for the guilt factor! We meet at a park 3 times a week and workout bootcamp style while pushing strollers and using kids as weights if needed

    I tried working out at home and I have no success – since my 2.5 year old is glued to me all the time 🙂 – thank goodness he loves the day care at the gym and is happy to go there. So exhaustion is my hardest part of being a mom – as my cute son still doesn’t sleep through the night. I go to the gym 4 – 5 times a week but I need to get my nutrition in higher gear – I think I eat healthy – but I am not achieving the results I want and I am working out hard – even with carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands and tendinitis in both arms from elbow down. I need to clean up my diet even more. 🙂

    My kids are older now however they will come downstairs while I am working out and smile and say Mom you look great. Right now my new cat is my issue she comes downstairs with me and attacks my weights but life is short so I enjoy my kids smiling and giving me that wonderful compliment or the kitty trying to distract me it is all so worth it to me – god bless

    All of the above – plus my workout room and her (my 3 year old) playroom is the same room. I do a lot of Kettlebell so I am always afraid she’s going to get behind me and get smacked with the kettlebell…..

    For me the biggest hurdle is time/organization. This is what I just started and it seems to be working. I just started going to the gym at 5:00am daily as it is the only time I can consistently workout — I have a 3.5 year-old boy and a 3 month old little girl, so though I could go the gym later in the day and take them with me, it’s so much harder taking 3 people instead of 1, and I don’t like the idea of her going into the gym’s childcare center at only 3 months old. So, I hit the weights hard at this early hour, or do some kick-butt cardio at home while it’s still quiet in the house! This might not work for everyone, but for me, it works because a) it’s at a time when I very rarely have an interruption, b) I don’t feel guilty c) it is a time that’s just for me and I can count on it every day d) by the time kids get up, most of the time I’ve also showered and fully ready for the day! I find the days I am READY for my kids I am much happier than when I wake up TO them! The only challenge? Getting to bed early enough to get the proper rest I need! This picture Kim is so true! I would bet more fitness/figure/bikini competitors are without children vs. with as it is so much harder to achieve stellar physical condition when you are caring for others, especially young children (though I do not know this for a fact). It is hard to take care of yourself without being labeled as selfish, ESPECIALLY for women.

    This is why I love reading your postings! Your top 10 would also be my top ten. Now that my kids are 13 and 9, it’s easier to get a workout in but I remember my “workout” area looking just like yours. Thanks for sharing!

    This pic is so funny, Kim, mostly because I can totally relate! The other day I planned to go to the gym, but my 16 month old had other plans. My workout for the day consisted of a circuit style routine that I made up off the top of my head. I brought out my dumbells, and did my thing in the middle of the living room with my son watching, while Curious George was on TV in the background! It was hilarious, but sometimes you just “gotta do what ya gotta do”! I think the biggest trait that a Fit Mom needs to have is creativity and flexibility when it comes to your workouts because every now and then, your plan is guaranteed to go out the window, thanks to your kids!!

    Thanks for sharing your story, and showing the rest of us that you have the same struggles that we do!! You’re my #1 Fit Mom inspiration!

    Guilt. Sometimes I feel guilty for how much time is spent in the gym, preparing meals, or traveling to a show etc. But when they say “I’m so proud of you Mom” after a competition my heart skips a beat and I know it’s all good. After all there is nothing better than teaching by example.

    This made me laugh so hard. I couldn’t get to the gym due to Kitchen Remodel Madness, so I did my shoulder workout at home yesterday. I really wish I’d dragged my tired bottom to the gym because I had to not get in the way of the TV for teen, 11yo was finding it hilarious to join in, and my 6yo twins were playing catch with my stability ball.
    It always seems there’s not enough hours in the day to get everything done. I have no excuse now because I have gym equipment at home minus cardio machines but I can catch up on cardio anytime. So I’d say tiredness and time is my biggest struggle.
