Inspirational Mom, Yolanda Dixon

Fitness Universe Classic 2011 Champion Yolanda Dixon does what all mothers aim to do, lead by example. Hard to believe this mother of three could manage to find the time to work, take care of her family, and be a fitness champion, but she does it-daily! Yolanda has a powerful message regarding fitness, and she shows the importance of making Fitness a Family Affair.

 

As a busy working mother of three, she has experienced all the ups and down of pregnancy, weight gain, and struggling to find her Mojo again. Her story sheds light on the importance of mom feeling good about herself too. Yolanda is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside, and one of the most genuine people I have ever met. Thank you Yolanda for sharing your story, and helping Mothers see what is possible with hard work and determination.

Kim: Share a little about you. Have you gone through a transformation? How did you got your body back post-baby? Anything you’ve accomplished you would like to share?

Yolanda: As a child, I did dance and theatre and I loved performing on stage. Later on in life, these passions got pushed aside as I got married and had a baby. After my first baby (Leilani) was born, I really started to get into health and fitness. I was motivated to get back into shape and looking for something to push me to the next level. At this time, a friend of mine introduced me to the world of competitive fitness. I watched some videos of some previous shows and I was immediately hooked! I knew this was something that I had to do. I started to train and three months later I entered and won my first show. Competitive fitness allowed me to incorporate both my love for performing and my passion for healthy living. It was a perfect outlet for me.

 

After a few years, I stopped competing to take some time to grow my family. I was blessed with two more children. Although I worked out with my first two pregnancies I really slacked off on my third pregnancy.  I was so tired taking care of my 6 year old and my one year old and being pregnant that I just couldn’t get myself motivated to work out. My diet wasn’t the best either. I just lacked motivation all around. Then when the third baby came I felt overwhelmed even more. Now I had three children to care for and I was just tired all the time. I was out of shape and feeling like I lost my mojo. After several months of this, I was ready for a change. I slowly started to clean up my diet and eat better. Almost immediately, my energy levels increased. Encouraged by this, I started forcing myself to the gym (even though it took forever to get out of the house with the two babies!!) Once I got to the gym I would feel great. I could get a break from the babies, get some endorphins going and pick up my kids from the gym daycare feeling refreshed and read to face the rest of the day.  I know now then when I take the time to take care of myself, I am in turn a better mom, a better wife, and I’m a whole lot happier!

Kim: What is your favorite fit mom meal? Snack? Any go to items?

Yolanda: My kids love sweet potatoes. I just bake them in the oven cut them up and put them in smaller pieces in the fridge. Then my kid’s juts grab them throughout the day and eat them as snacks. This is super easy for me to do and my kids are able to satisfy their sweet tooth in a healthy way.

Kim: How do you stay fit amidst a hectic schedule and manage to do it all?

 

Yolanda: For me, the hardest part is trying to find balance. I am now a mother of three children and it can be a challenge to balance the demands of family life while still staying focused on nutrition and fitness.

The way I find balance is by bringing my kids along the fitness journey. Eating healthy and staying active is something we all do as a family.

Also, I found that by getting up at 5am (before everyone wakes up) I am able to get my personal workouts in and then I’m free for the rest of the day to dedicate to my family.

Kim: Words of motivation and inspiration for other moms?

 

Yolanda: As moms we are always busy taking care of others but it’s important that we remember to take the time to take care of ourselves too!

    What a beautiful story, after years of being a mom and a step mom, I am trying to do exactly what Yolanda has mentioned, “to remember to take the time to take care of ourselves too!” but it is not so easy to do especially after not doing it for so many years. But starting tomorrow I will try even harder as reading your article really hits home, as Yolanda is my niece and I am so proud of the women and mother she has become!

      Thank you Alicia. Giving back is the true reward. I have so much respect for what women, especially mothers, do daily that I wanted to create a place to feature them and their stories!
