Melissa Naulin is so easy to relate to. Don’t be fooled by her after picture into thinking that she’s just another beautiful girl and her 70 pound weight loss transformation came easily to her. She fought for it. She shares how she has “been there” and knows the frustration of trying to lose weight.  She made her lifestyle over with a commitment to learning how to eat and how to exercise. Kim: Share a little about you.

Melissa: My name is Melissa Naulin. I grew up in Newbury Park, CA and now reside in Simi Valley, CA with my husband and daughter, Makenna, who will be 2 in May. I am an Esthetician, specializing in skin care, full body waxing and airbrush tanning. I am currently studying for my certified personal training and fitness nutrition certification.

Kim: Have you gone through a transformation?

Melissa: Yes! I have always been a little overweight and as long as I can remember wanting to lose that “last 10 pounds”. Little did I know, I had much more than just 10 pounds to lose! More importantly, I had no clue that I had the potential and inner strength to achieve my dream body with the right guidance, training and nutrition. I was around 145 pounds when I got pregnant (I’m 5’3″). I gained 40 pounds with my pregnancy. It was very difficult seeing the number on the scale at a whopping 185!! But, I knew it was for my baby girl and she was more important than anything else.

Kim: How did you get your body back post-baby?

Melissa: I started out doing the p90x videos at work, between appointments with my clients, walking a lot and trying to clean up my diet after 9 months of indulging a little too much. This definitely helped in the first 2 months and I dropped 30 pounds of my pregnancy weight. But, I wasn’t consistent with the workouts or my diet. Trying to juggle my business, a new baby, running a household, cooking and functioning on very little sleep made it difficult to have any time or energy left for me.
By the time my daughter turned 1, I had lost about 50 pounds with cardio machines and “Bar” type classes and I felt great, but I was still unhappy with my body. I wanted to be tighter, toned and have more muscle definition. A client of mine had given me the name of her trainer about 6 months earlier. It was hard to justify the investment, but I figured it was an investment in my health, my happiness and if I felt better about myself, I would be a better mother and wife. So I decided to start with him twice a week. I soon increased to 3 times a week of intense weight training, 2 days of moderate cardio and a cleaned up diet of lean protein, complex carbs and lots of veggies.

Within 7 months of starting with my trainer, Jamo Nezzar of Jamcore Training, I had lost an additional 25 pounds (75 all together), had completely changed by body and I went on to compete in my first NPC Bikini Competition, something I NEVER in a million years ever thought I would do!

I have a new passion for fitness and nutrition!! I love lifting weights, I love seeing my body progress and become more conditioned. And, above all, I love that I am setting a positive example for my daughter and family to live a healthy lifestyle. I want to continue to inspire others to get healthy as well and adopt a life of exercise and clean eating.

Kim: Anything you’ve accomplished you would like to share?

Melissa: Becoming a new person inside and out!! Looking at exercise and food in a completely different way. Competing in my first NPC Bikini Competition in December 2011. I felt like a rock star!! I am studying to become a certified personal trainer and nutrition specialist, so I can help others get healthy and achieve their dream body as well. I also have a facebook page, Jamcore Girl Melissa Naulin, where I share healthy recipes, motivational tips, offer nutritional and training advice and support other moms and women to stay on track. I think it helps a lot of women to be able to relate to someone who has “been there”.

Kim: What is your favorite fit-mom, fit-family meal? Snack? Any go to items?

Melissa: It’s hard to make healthy meals that little ones will enjoy, so I try to get creative!

For breakfast, my family likes oatmeal pancakes. It’s so easy! I mix old-fashioned oats, vanilla protein powder or nonfat plain greek yogurt, ground flaxseed, egg whites and alternate the fruit I use for different flavors (blueberries, strawberries, mango, banana, pumpkin, etc). Blend up and cook on a griddle with a little coconut oil. I’ll make a bunch of silver dollar sized pancakes to put in baggies and throw in the diaper bag for snacks! My favorite grab and go snack is turkey muffins: ground turkey, egg whites and tons of chopped veggies (broccoli, asparagus, peppers, mushrooms, spinach, etc). I also keep apples, almonds and my homemade protein bars on hand at all times.

For dinner my daughter likes homemade pizza (what kid doesn’t?): Ezekiel muffin or sprouted grain tortilla with low sodium tomato paste or pesto, spinach, and mozzarella cheese broiled until brown. She also loves fresh corn, carrots, beets, and sweet potatoes and of course, lots of sweet fruit for dessert 🙂 grapes, blueberries, raspberries, and tangerines.

Another fun one for kids is banana dogs! Ezekiel hot dog bun, spread with almond butter and honey, topped with a banana.

Kim: Favorite Fit-Family activity?

Melissa: We love walking our dogs to the park. My daughter can play in the sand and the dogs get to run around and get some energy out. We will also go to the duck pond on the weekends and feed the ducks. She loves to run through the grass and play on the playground. I would love to get her into swimming lessons this summer.

Kim: How do you stay fit amidst a hectic schedule and manage to do it all?

Melissa: I schedule in my workouts just like any other appointment. The sessions that I have with my trainer hold me accountable. They are pre-paid and he is expecting me to show up! If I skip a workout, I feel stressed and irritable. It’s my “me time” that helps, not only to keep me in shape, but to do a better job in every aspect of my life. Working out is a regular part of my routine, just as brushing my teeth or going to work. It’s not an option not to do it.

I also track my calories every day on a super convenient app on my iPhone. Once you make it a habit, it becomes second nature and it really helps to see exactly what and how much you are eating.

Kim: Words of motivation and inspiration for other moms?

Melissa: I know how frustrating it is to constantly be seeking the answer to a better body. There is only ONE answer: consistent weight training and a clean, balanced diet. For me, I needed the guidance and direction of a professional. I tried every diet imaginable and nothing ever worked long-term. Once I learned the proper way to train and to eat, everything fell into place. That’s the “magic pill”!

I believe it can be very beneficial to work with a trainer/nutritionist, even if it’s just for a couple of weeks, to get you started in the right direction. If that’s not financially possible, there is TONS of information online. Look up recipes on clean eating. You can even get your kids and spouse involved and get them excited to try something new! Healthy weight loss starts with proper nutrition for sure. Get active with your kids, get outside and in the sunshine, go for a walk or to the park. Many gyms offer child care too. So you can work out and your kids can play and make new friends. It’s a win-win for both of you.
