Jessica Summerall’s fitness journey began after the birth of her son. In her early 20’s she wasn’t taking care of herself, and once she got married and then pregnant she found herself weighing over 200 pounds. Haven’t we all had a time in our lives when we decided, this is it, I’m ready for change! Determined to be healthy Jessica transformed herself and is an inspiration to mothers. She didn’t give up on her dreams and even became a trainer, runs marathons, and started her own business, About Face Fitness. Join me in celebrating Jessica, and get inspired by her success story.
Kim: Share a little about you.
Jessica: I am Jessica Summerall. I am 26 years old and I own a personal training business, I am an Isagenix consultant, and I am in school for my Masters degree. I served in the Air Force for 4 years where I met my husband who is also in the Air Force. I got medically discharged for having seizures and moved to Gulf Breeze, Florida, where we currently reside, to be with my husband. We got pregnant and had my son Wesley on December 7th 2008. He will be 3 in December.
Kim: Have you gone through a transformation?
Jessica: Oh yes! I started gaining weight when I turned 21- too much drinking and not enough taking care of myself. When I got married I gained even more weight. By the time I was pregnant I was 140 pounds, at 5’2. I was over 200 pounds when I had my son. I stopped weighing because I couldn’t even look at that number. Towards the end of my pregnancy I was determined to change my life and get healthy once my son came.
Kim: How did you get your body back post-baby?
Jessica: When I had my son I hired a personal trainer and entered into a competition. I tracked my food with an online program. Shortly after I decided I wanted to become a trainer. I started my own personal training business and starting teaching mommy boot camps in the park. I also took up running since that was something I could do with my son in the stroller. I was back down to my pre baby weight in 4 months. In the year that followed I worked hard and got back down to my pre marriage weight.
Kim: Anything you’ve accomplished you would like to share?
Jessica: After having my son I worked my way up to running my first 5K. Then I did my first half marathon. After that I helped a charity called PPMD raise money and did the Goofy Half marathon on Saturday and full marathon on Sunday. It was an amazing experience. When I completed that I wanted to go after a life long goal of competing in a figure competition. I was so afraid because of all my stretch marks but I wanted to go for it. I competed in the Punta Gorda Fitness Universe competition last Saturday! I am now training for another 1/2 marathon and 2 more fitness competitions! Since my son was born I also started my own personal training business, About Face Fitness, that I have grown into a very successful business. I have been able to help many other reach their goals through my journey!
Kim: What is your favorite fit-mom, fit-family meal? Snack? Any go to items?
Jessica: Our snack and go to items are the IsaLean bars for my son, he loves them. For me they are the IsaLean shakes. I love easy meals for my family. The crock pot is great for cutting up veggies, putting in chicken and chicken broth, and letting it cook all day! We also love recipes from Busy Girl Healthy Life and the Clean Eating Magazine!
Kim: Favorite Fit-Family activity?
Jessica: My son loves the park and playing chase. My personal training studio is in our home. My son loves to go in there and punch the speed bag and the punching bag. It’s so cute to watch!
Kim: How do you stay fit amidst a hectic schedule and manage to do it all?
Jessica: I set priorities. I hardly ever watch tv. I go to bed early and I wake up early. I try to cut out things in my life that are time wasters. The main thing is keeping a balance. If you stay balanced you will be amazed at all you can do!
Kim: Words of motivation and inspiration for other moms?
Jessica: Never say never. I am so sad when I hear mom’s say “I will never have my old body back”. I have a better body now! Don’t be so hard on yourself. Momma’s take on a lot and we can be way to hard on ourselves. You created a human being. Your body gave you the biggest blessing you could ever receive. Love your body for it. Thank your body! You can never go back and redo a day so make sure you treasure every single day! Don’t take everything so seriously. Lighten up, get silly, and have fun!
