I have to make a confession. Not long ago, I was out for a morning run with my iPod on shuffle. I was enjoying the beat and energy of an old familiar song – until I started really listening to the words…

Has that ever happened to you?

  • Maybe your kids were in the car and the words stood out to you more?
  • Or you heard the words rather than just felt the beat and you were shocked by what they said!

Trust me, I get it! My old favorites include Snoop Dog, and while the music might be great, the words are completely inconsistent for me as a woman of faith.

This is a judgment-free zone, so I never want to come across as a voice of condemnation, but I do want you to consider the words of the music you listen to.

Does it Speak Life, or is it sexual, about cheating or being hotter and better than everyone else? Music affects our thoughts and our actions.

So back to my run that day… I took my headphones off and asked God to help me find music that would honor Him. The minute I got home I opened up iTunes and started searching for Christian Workout Music, Christian Hip Hop… anything that sounded like what I was used to, and I found a new world that day – one I didn’t even know existed.

The first song I really connected with was “Our God is Greater” by Vauhaligan Walwyn also known as Von Won. His music showed me that I could work out, worship God and also include this encouraging music to my day rather than relegate God to Sunday mornings at church.

After I loaded his music onto my iPod, I got the nerve to email him and share how his music was exactly what I needed to hear, and guess what? He emailed me back. So I asked my (now friend) Christian music artist, Von Won, to chime in and share his thoughts on music:

  • You are what you eat and that goes the same with your music.
  • Music is so powerful – what goes inside can transform what happens on the outside.
  • Music has been a parent to many. It has encouraged people to fall in love, separate, get married, do drugs, have sex, fight, commit suicide and even run away.
  • What is your playlist influencing you to do? Life and death is in the power of the tongue, so your music can either be speaking life or death to you.
  • Roman 10:17 – “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” Is your music feeding your faith or your fears? Your beliefs or your doubts?
  • When I changed my music, my life changed. I went from listening to secular artists to inspirational recording artists. I feed myself with faith daily. The seeds I was putting in my spirit were positive and it began to change my outsides. Music is powerful. *Thank you Vaughaligan for your time and input.

I have to admit that since I made over my playlist my life changed too. I love how he said is your music feeding your faith or your fears? Anything we don’t feed, will die. So I say we feed our faith and starve our fears, doubts, insecurities compromise and even our excuses and use our music choices to help us Overcome what holds us back.

Because music is such a powerful motivator and influencer will you consider giving Christian music a try?

The energy I get from an inspiring playlist can mean the difference between an incredible workout and one I struggle through. I greatly rely on it when I work out – don’t you?

So here’s my Christian Workout Playlist compiled from all different genres.

Check it out! I’d love to know what you think?
