I’m excited to share this inspiring Christian Health and Fitness Interview with Jake Dalton – Olympic Gymnast.

Jake is an outstanding athlete, but what sets him apart is his faith in God.

Please share a little about you?

I am a 2012 Olympic Gymnast and a 4 Time World Medalist. Gymnastics has been my entire life and I have sacrificed a lot to get where I am. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and friends but also my faith. I live in Oklahoma and train at the University of Oklahoma where I graduated from. I am currently training for the 2016 Olympics and I am looking to take over my parents gymnastics club in Nevada when I retire.

Watch Jake perform at the Olympics! This is AMAZING!

Do you follow a specific nutrition or training plan?

I follow my own nutrition plan. The last few years I have studied a lot about nutrition to try and better my performance as an athlete. I come up with my own plan after testing what works and what doesn’t work for me. I am always adjusting and looking to better my plans so I can be the best athlete possible.

Have you struggled with body image, overtraining or an eating disorder?

I would say I struggled with over training or what I thought was over training. My freshman year in college was a huge adjustment because the training was strict and scheduled to break you down and then build you up in the perfect time to compete. I had trouble understanding this grinding process. I came to realize that my coaches plan works and I learned to follow it and trust it.

Do you think your health is important to God?

I do think my health is important to God because He gave us these amazing machines (our bodies) and for me I feel that He blessed me with a talent and I need to make the best of what He gave me.

Do you think it’s vain to be involved in fitness?

I feel that it is great to be involved in fitness because working out keeps our bodies healthy and allows us to live longer. For the most part I think the fitness industry is a great one to be in because it is full of hard working dedicated people.

Does your family follow your healthy habits?

They try to. They are very busy with work and it is hard to be able to cook every meal when you are that busy. They also do not workout as much as I do but yes especially lately they try to follow my healthy habits.

Do you have any advice for Christian parents trying to get their kids healthy or teach a healthy body image in our world?

I would just say to let the kids try out sports. I think sports are a great way to keep kids active and also teaches them teamwork, leadership and dedication. I think another important thing is self acceptance. If you are happy with the way you look and you are healthy because you want to be then that is the key to having a healthy body image of yourself.

What is your personal belief in combining faith and fitness?

I use my faith to guide me in the gym and even to keep me safe. If I am scared of a turn because I do not want to crash on a skill or if I am about to compete a routine that is very important for my team then I lean on my faith to guide me to success. I know that God has a plan whether I fail or I succeed it is all in God’s plan and I did everything I could to be ready.

How do you feel being a Christian has helped you with your health goals? Any go to scriptures?

I feel that it has helped me lookout for others and try to help my teammates when I can. This makes my teammates better and in turn makes me work harder. It all comes back around when working out with a team because everyone helps everyone.

My favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13. I got this tattooed on my side in January of 2012 because I was going to try out for the Olympic Team and I wanted to have a daily reminder to do everything I could to be on that team and that it was God’s plan if I made it or not.

What advice do you have for Christians looking to get healthy?

I would say that understand getting healthy wont be easy but if you turn to your faith during the hard parts that is a great way to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

With topics like Parenting, Finances and Marriage taught in Church, do you think it would help to include teaching about living a healthy lifestyle and having a body image consistent with the word of God?

I do yes. I think anytime you can teach people about the importance of health and being healthy it can make a huge impact. The more people we can keep healthy the longer and better lives everyone can live. It is also a respect that we treat our bodies the way God wanted us to.

Anything you would like to add?

I think fitness and faith go hand in hand because there are going to be times where you are tested and you need to do your best to stay on track. You are going to fail but as long as you do your best to remember the end goal, you will be successful.

Thank you, Jake for taking the time to share how you rely on your faith. I’ll be praying for you as you train for Rio.
